Qatar PM convinced Iran to accept ceasefire: Talks source

On Tuesday, a source familiar with the discussions revealed that Qatar’s prime minister successfully convinced Iran to accept a ceasefire proposed by the United States in the wake of missile strikes on an American base near Doha.

Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani engaged in discussions with Iranian officials following a conversation with US Vice President JD Vance, according to sources.

A source informed AFP that Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani successfully convinced Iran to accept the proposal during a phone call with Iranian officials.

On Tuesday, Israel confirmed its agreement to a ceasefire with Iran, a development that US President Donald Trump announced after a protracted 12-day conflict.

The announcement came in the wake of Iran’s assault on the Al Udeid base in Qatar, the largest US military installation in the Middle East, which was reportedly a retaliation for US airstrikes targeting Iranian nuclear facilities.

During a press conference, the Prime Minister of Qatar condemned the Iranian attack as “unacceptable” while emphasizing that the country’s response would be “diplomatic and legal”.

“The assault on the State of Qatar is deemed unacceptable, particularly given the nation’s significant diplomatic initiatives aimed at de-escalating the situation,” he stated.

The prime minister called on Washington and Tehran to restart discussions regarding Iran’s nuclear program, which were suspended following the onset of Israeli air strikes on Iran.
