UN rights chief praises opportunity to 'once and for all' halt carnage in Gaza

UN rights head Volker Turk stated on Saturday that US President Donald Trump’s Gaza peace proposal is a “crucial opportunity” to cease killing in the Palestinian territories “permanently.”

Trump has urged Israel, a crucial US partner, to cease hostilities in the Gaza Strip. At the same time, the Palestinian terrorist organisation Hamas has expressed its willingness to free all detainees and initiate discussions for a resolution to the almost two-year conflict.

Turk anticipates that the momentum generated by the US president’s peace plan will “facilitate a permanent cessation of hostilities, succeeded by recovery and reconstruction,” according to his office’s statement on X, which called for a resolution “consistent with international human rights and humanitarian laws, and the essential two-state solution.”

He characterised the initiative as an essential chance for all stakeholders and significant nations to engage earnestly and definitively halt the violence and suffering in Gaza, facilitate the influx of humanitarian assistance, and guarantee the release of hostages and many incarcerated Palestinians.

The proposal outlines a phased Israeli disengagement from Gaza and the disarmament of Hamas.

The World Health Organisation endorsed the concept, especially the potential for hospital reconstruction.

“The most effective remedy is tranquility,” stated Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the head of the UN health organisation, in a post on X on Saturday.

Hamas has expressed its willingness to free all captives and engage in negotiations for peace following nearly two years of conflict.

On Saturday, Israel announced that its forces continued operations in Gaza City and cautioned civilians against returning, despite appeals from the relatives of Israeli prisoners and Trump for an immediate cessation of hostilities.
