US President Donald Trump announced his intention to “make a phone call” on Wednesday over the escalating hostilities between Thailand and Cambodia over their disputed border, which have necessitated evacuations.
In a rally speech to supporters in Pennsylvania on Tuesday, Trump enumerated other diplomatic disputes he has engaged in, closing with: “And I regret to mention one named Cambodia-Thailand, which commenced today.”
“I must make a phone call tomorrow, and I believe they will understand,” he concluded.
“Who else could assert, ‘I will initiate a phone call and halt a conflict between two formidable nations’?”
In October, Trump co-signed a ceasefire between Cambodia and Thailand during his vacation to Asia.
The conflict between Thailand and Cambodia centres on a century-old dispute over borders drawn by France’s colonial administration, with both parties asserting claims to numerous boundary temples.
